How to Install Wooden Kitchen Cabinets Like a Pro
Installing wooden kitchen cabinets can be a rewarding and cost-effective way to update your kitchen. However, it can also be a challenging and time-consuming project if you don’t have the right tools, skills and knowledge. In this post, we will show you how to install wooden kitchen cabinets like a pro, following these simple steps:
Step 1: Mark Up the Wall First
Before you start hanging your cabinets, you need to mark up the wall where they will go. Use a level and a pencil to draw a horizontal line across the wall at the height of the base of your upper cabinets. This line will help you align your cabinets later. Then, use a stud finder to locate and mark the wall studs behind the drywall. You will need to drill screws into these studs to secure your cabinets.
Step 2: Position the First Cabinet
Start with one of the corner cabinets for your upper or lower row. Remove any doors and drawers from the cabinet to make it lighter and easier to handle. Position the cabinet on the wall or on the floor, depending on which row you are working on. Use shims to level and plumb the cabinet if needed. Make sure that there is enough space for opening doors and drawers, as well as for appliances and countertops.
Step 3: Clamp, Drill and Fasten
Once you have positioned your first cabinet correctly, clamp it in place with C-clamps or quick-release clamps. Then, drill pilot holes through the back of the cabinet into the wall studs behind it. Use wood screws that are long enough to penetrate at least 1 inch into the studs. Drive one screw into each stud to fasten your cabinet securely.
Step 4: Align Each Additional Cabinet Evenly and Install Them
Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each additional cabinet that you want to install along your wall. Make sure that each cabinet is aligned evenly with its neighbor by using clamps and a level. You can also use wood glue or biscuits to join adjacent cabinets together for extra strength.
Step 5: Install Drawers, Doors and Internal Fittings
After you have installed all your cabinets on both rows, you can reinstall any drawers, doors and internal fittings that you removed earlier. Adjust any hinges or slides as needed to ensure smooth operation.
Step 6: Enjoy Your New Wooden Kitchen Cabinets
